Green Drinks: 5 – 7PM ET

Lauren Crossman, Kalamazoo College senior, recently conducted a study on sustainable business practices with twenty two businesses on the Kalamazoo Mall. During this study she met with business owners, graded each against an eco-report card, celebrated current sustainable practices, and collaboratively developed goals to make business practices more sustainable.

Join us for a free panel discussion to learn more about Lauren’s research and hear from project partners on key takeaways and actionable goals they are excited to implement. This month’s Green Drinks is in partnership with the Sustainable Business Collaborative and Climate Emergency Month. Please register with the Eventbrite.

Popcorn, candy and refreshments will be available for purchase at the theatre.

We will be meeting in the Mezzanine Balcony at the Kalamazoo State Theater.

About Lauren: Lauren Crossman is a current senior at Kalamazoo (K) College, who will graduate with a Bachelor’s in Political Science this June. During her time at K, Lauren pursued off-campus work at Bee Joyful Shop, Michigan’s first zero-waste store, where she began working in March of 2021. While working there, Lauren had gone from a Guide to a Lead position and has learned the ins and outs of eco-alternative products and sustainable business practices.

Inspired by how Bee Joyful Shop had cut waste and costs, Lauren wanted to see more businesses along the Kalamazoo Mall make changes to become more sustainable. In June 2022, Lauren started a new position at Bee Joyful as an intern. For her internship, she researched different business practices and alternative products for businesses ranging from cocktail straws to packaging materials for online orders that would help reduce waste and save money. By the end of the fall, Lauren had spoken with 22 businesses about their current practices and worked together to create eco-goals. Working with these businesses to talk about sustainability and encourage better practices has helped the Kalamazoo Mall take one step closer to becoming an eco-friendly place for people to visit.

Lauren hopes the businesses she worked with will continue to think about their impact and set new goals. She has found her passion in sustainable work and has begun searching for careers in the field for post-graduation.

Award-winning comedian and host of the Nateland podcast, Nate Bargatze returns to the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre on Friday, April 28th 2023 for TWO SHOWS with special guests Julian McCullough and Steve Rogers!

Hailing from Old Hickory, Tennessee, stand-up comedian Nate Bargatze is selling out shows across the world on his Raincheck Tour.

In July 2020, the comedian teamed up with All Things Comedy to release his weekly podcast, Nateland. The world is a crazy place and there’s plenty of podcasts out there tackling the tough issues. However, Nateland will tackle the meaningless issues that we face day to day to give listeners a much-needed mental break from fighting the good fight. New episodes release Wednesdays, with video available on Nate’s YouTube channel and audio available everywhere you get podcasts.

Nate followed in the showbiz footsteps of his dad, a former clown turned world class magician, who’s influence is seen on Nate’s 2015 debut special Full Time Magic and his debut album Yelled at By a Clown. Nate’s half-hour Netflix Special The Standups premiered on July 4th, 2017. In March 2019, Nate’s first solo one-hour Netflix special, The Tennessee Kid premiered globally with rave reviews, and recently released his highly anticipated 2nd special for the streaming platform, The Greatest Average American on March 18th, 2021.

Bargatze’s comedy is both clean and relatable, evident in his ten appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He also appeared on Conan four times, was a recurring guest on @midnight, and had his own Comedy Central Presents in 2011. Off-screen, Nate was part of Jimmy Fallon’s Clean-Cut Comedy Tour, and has done live shows for the troops in Iraq and Kuwait five times.  In addition to touring the country as a headliner, Nate toured in arenas with Chris Rock on his 2017 Total Blackout Tour. He regularly performs at Bonnaroo, SXSW, Oddball Comedy Festival, Sasquatch, Clusterfest, and the JFL Montreal Comedy Festival, where he’s received critical acclaim multiple years in a row.

Nate was featured as one of Esquire’s “Best New Comedians” by Jim Gaffigan, one of Marc Maron’s “Comedians to Watch” in Rolling Stone, one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch” for 2015, and as #1 on Vulture’s ‘50 Comedians You Should Know’ in 2015. His debut one-hour special, Full Time Magic, premiered on Comedy Central that spring, followed by his debut album, Yelled at by a Clown, which reached #1 on the iTunes Comedy Charts and remained on Billboard’s Top Ten Comedy Charts for weeks.

Award-winning comedian, podcaster, and host of the hit HBO Max original series Fboy Island, Nikki Glaser makes her Kalamazoo State Theatre debut on Friday, January 20th 2023.

Nikki Glaser is one of the funniest female voices in comedy today. For over a decade at clubs and theatres across the country, and as the host of three hit podcasts, she has been honing her shockingly- honest, no-holds barred style of comedy. Her brand-new daily show, THE NIKKI GLASER PODCAST, launched in 2021 through iHeartMedia and Will Ferrell’s Big Money Players Network. It is a daily companion podcast that is peppered with Nikki’s sense of humor and honesty to help keep listeners sane, well-informed and laughing through life. 2022 was a big year for Nikki. Her E! reality show STUCK IN ST. LOUIS was released to rave reviews. Nikki’s latest comedy special, GOOD CLEAN FILTH (2022) was released on HBO, offering her brutally-honest take on sex, dating, feminism and more. Nikki also returned to host the hit HBO Max series FBOY ISLAND, which was released in July 2022.

Her upcoming nationwide comedy tour THE GOOD GIRL TOUR is kicking off in 2023.

Glaser has taken her love for reality tv to the next level by hosting the new HBO MAX reality dating series FBOY ISLAND. FBOY ISLAND, follows three women who move to a tropical island where they’re joined by 24 men – 12 self-proclaimed “Nice Guys” looking for love and 12 self-proclaimed “FBoys,” there to compete for cold, hard cash. The women will navigate the dating pool together with the hope of finding a lasting love connection. By the finale, all will be revealed – who is a Nice Guy, who is an FBoy and who the women ultimately choose.

Previously, Nikki was flexing her over-sharing muscle as the host of Comedy Central’s first live daily morning show, YOU UP WITH NIKKI GLASER for SiriusXM, which ran from February 2018 to October 2020. Nikki’s recent Netflix comedy special, BANGIN’, was released October 2019. BANGIN’ was the most watched Netflix special of the month and VULTURE included it on their “10 Best Comedy Specials of 2019” year-end list. Previously, Nikki hosted, co-created and executive produced the critically-acclaimed and daring comedic show, NOT SAFE WITH NIKKI GLASER, for Comedy Central and NIKKI & SARA LIVE for MTV.

Nikki was a standout at the Comedy Central Roasts of Alec Baldwin, Bruce Willis and Rob Lowe, which led to her guest-hosting JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE! and hosting the inaugural edition of the 2021 MTV MOVIE & TV AWARDS: UNSCRIPTED, which earned her stellar reviews. She also had memorable film and television roles in Judd Apatow’s TRAINWRECK, NBC’s AP BIO and INSIDE AMY SCHUMER, amongst others.

Nikki has multiple stand-up specials and late-night tv appearances in which she jokes about her most humiliating moments as a woman in the modern world. Nikki’s past and current struggles with anorexia, depression, and anxiety are fair game in both her stand-up, and in in-depth interviews with THE HOWARD STERN SHOW, WTF WITH MARC MARON and JOE ROGAN. She has become a complete open book on mic – and not just for the laughs, she’s also adamant on being the empowering voice for women that she yearned for as a confused adolescent.

Musical comedy icon, five-time Grammy Award winner and Producer, Co-Writer and subject of the new biopic WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story “Weird Al” Yankovic is coming to the Kalamazoo State Theatre on Thursday, February 2nd,2023. Tickets start at $52.50 plus applicable fees and go on-sale Friday, November 18th at 10:00am. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com and the Kalamazoo State Theatre Box Office.

About Weird Al: Four years after his first foray into unfamiliar concert territory with his highly-acclaimed Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, “Weird Al” Yankovic is pressing his luck again, this time with The Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour.

Once again drawing from his back catalogue of 14 studio albums, Weird Al promises to deliver a different set list every night, with no two shows the same. As before, rather than focusing on the hits from his career, the show will feature Yankovic’s non-parody material – the somewhat more obscure pastiches and original songs that have largely escaped the pop culture radar but are adored by his long-time fans. And like the last Vanity Tour, he will be playing smaller, more intimate venues, leaving behind the high-octane theatrics that he’s known for and going bare-bones – no costumes, no props, no video screens… just Al and his band of almost four decades hanging out on stage, playing music.

Reflecting on his decision to bring back the stripped-down concerts, Al said “I’ve loved doing every single incarnation of my live show, but honestly the Vanity tour is the most fun I’ve ever had on stage… so I’ve been dying to get back out there and torture everybody with it once again!”

Opening the show each night will be returning fan favorite and Al’s long-time friend (and UHF cast member), the legendary comedian Emo Philips.

“Weird Al” Yankovic is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time. A five-time Grammy winner, his 2014 release Mandatory Fun was the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200. His is one of only five artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades, the other four being Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2, and Kenny G. On August 27, 2018, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce awarded Weird Al with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

On November 4, 2022 The Roku Channel unveiled the biopic WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story to rave reviews (Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes).

American alt-folk heroes Bright Eyes is coming to the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre November 7, 2022!

Sometimes it feels like you hear a Bright Eyes song with your whole body. From Conor Oberst’s early recordings in an Omaha basement in 1995 all the way up to 2020, Bright Eyes’ music tries to unravel the impossible tangles of dissent: personal and political, external and internal. It’s a study of the beauty in unsteadiness in all its forms – in a voice, beliefs, love, identity, and what fills up the spaces in-between. And in so many ways, it’s just about searching for a way through. The year 2020 is full of significant anniversaries for Bright Eyes. Fevers and Mirrors was released 20 years ago this May, while Digital Ash in a Digital Urn and I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning both turned 15 in January. The latter, a singer-songwriter tour-de-force released amidst the Bush presidency and Iraq war, wades through incisive anti-war rhetoric and micro, intimate calamities. On the title track and throughout the record, Oberst sings about body counts in the newspaper, televised wars, the bottomless pit of American greed, struggling to understand the world alongside one’s own turmoil. In its own way, I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning carved out its place in the canon of great anti-war albums by being both present and prophetic, its urgency enduring 15 years later.

In 2011 the release of The People’s Key, Bright Eyes’ ninth and most recent album, ushered in an unofficial hiatus for the beloved project. In the time since, the work of the band’s core members – Oberst, multi-instrumentalist Mike Mogis, and multi-instrumentalist Nathaniel Walcott – has remained omnipresent, through both the members’ original work and collaboration. In recent years, Mogis produced records for beloved folk acts First Aid Kit and Joseph, among others, as well as mixed the fine-spun ennui of Phoebe Bridgers’ breakthrough 2017 debut, Stranger in the Alps. Mogis and bandmate Walcott also teamed up to write the original scores for The Fault in Our Stars, Stuck in Love, and Lovely Still, and Walcott worked as a solo composer scoring number of independent feature-length films. Walcott spent extensive time on collaboration; in addition to his arrangement work for Mavis Staples, First Aid Kit, and M. Ward, he contributed studio work to artists ranging from U2 to jazz guitarist Jeff Parker, and also traveled the world as a touring member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Amidst the current overwhelming uncertainty and upheaval of global and personal worlds, Oberst, Mogis, and Walcott reunited in 2020 under the Bright Eyes moniker as both an escape from, and a confrontation of, trying times. Getting the band back together felt right, and necessary, and the friendship at the core of the band has been a longtime pillar of Bright Eyes’ output. For Bright Eyes, this long-awaited re-emergence feels like coming home.
