Morris Day and The Time, a vibrant funk band that has been thrilling audiences since the early 1980’s, will perform at Kalamazoo State Theatre on Friday, September 21st.

Formed in Minneapolis in 1981, the Time was the brainchild of Prince, who put the group together as an outlet for his funkier leaning. Fronted by the colorful and charismatic Morris Day and featuring a talented cast of players, the Time racked up a string of hits in the early ‘80s, gaining an additional popularity boost from their featured role in Prince’s classic 1984 rock musical, Purple Rain. With his dynamic dancing and smooth yet gutsy vocals, Morris Day and the Time played and essential role in the development of the Twin City dance/club sound of the 1980’s. Ice Cream Castle, the groups most popular album, is best remembered for the infectious singles Jungle Love and the Rufus Thomas influenced, The Bird. With their palpable pop energy and catchy choruses, both songs were hits on both urban and pop radio.

Morris Day and the Time will get Wild and Loose together again on the Kalamazoo State Theatre stage, Friday, September 21st.

Rated among the 10 greatest electric guitar players of all time by Time Magazine, Yngwie Malmsteen, brings his talent to rock the Kalamazoo State Theatre for one night only on November 2nd! Yngwie has dominated the world of solo guitar for two decades. When he was barely 20, Yngwie exploded onto the music scene with his jaw-dropping technique of lightning fast harmonic minor scalar riffing. His 1984 album, “Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s Rising Force,” established seemingly overnight the style now referred to a neo-classical melodic rock.

A legend in both style and technique, Yngwie’s long career reached new heights when his totally classical work for orchestra and solo electric guitar, “Concerto Suite,” was released, proving that his classical credentials were genuine. A respected musician among both his peers and his fans, Yngwie continues to play and compose at a level of mastery that many career musician only dream of.

The American rock band, Styx, is coming back to Kalamazoo State Theatre on November 15. Formed in 1972 in Chicago, Styx became famous for its albums released in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They are best known for melding the style of pop rock and hard rock with the power of a hard-rock guitar balanced with acoustic guitar, synthesizers mixed with acoustic piano, upbeat tracks with power ballads, and incorporating elements of international musical theatre.

In recent years, a new generation of Styx fans have joined with older Styx fans at concerts around the world. Through live excellence and rewarding material from over four decades of barn-burning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts, the band proves themselves to be one worth standing the test of time. Styx is best known for the hit songs “Lady”, “Come Sail Away”, “Babe”, “The Best of Times”, “Too Much Time on My Hands” and “Mr. Roboto” and has had 4 consecutive albums certified multi-platinum by the RIAA as well as 16 top 40 singles in the US, 8 of which hit the top 10.
