Four-time Grammy Award winner Snarky Puppy is making their triumphant return to the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre on April 2, 2023!

After over a decade of relentless touring and recording in all but complete obscurity, the Texas-bred quasi-collective suddenly found itself held up by the press and public as one of the major figures in the jazz world. But as the category names for all four of the band’s Grammy® awards would indicate (Best R&B Performance in 2014, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016, 2017, and 2021), Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band. It’s not a fusion band, and it’s definitely not a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times’ advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to “take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not.”

Snarky Puppy is a collective of sorts with as many as 20 members in regular rotation. At its core, the band represents the convergence of both black and white American music culture with various accents from around the world. Japan, Argentina, Canada and the United Kingdom, all have representation in the group’s membership. But more than the cultural diversity of the individual players, the defining characteristic of Snarky Puppy’s music is the joy of performing together in the perpetual push to grow creatively.

September 30th 2022 Snarky Puppy sees the release of their eagerly anticipated 14th album – Empire Central.  It’s sound is big and bold, chill and laid back, rooted in its native culture while reaching outward, forward bound. With 16 new compositions, the group looks fondly at where it’s come from, confident in the polished power from which its members continue to build the unique Snarky Puppy sound.

Founded by Jorge Glem, Edward Ramírez and Héctor Molina in 2005, C4 Trío has as main protagonist the Cuatro Venezolano. As one of the most important and innovative venezuelan musical proposals characterized by an unusual format, C4 Trío mixes elements of traditional music, jazz, pop, world music and latin music. In 2009, Rodner Padilla (electric bass) joins the ensemble.

C4 Trío has toured in America and Europe and recorded 6 albums with great sale success. In 2013, “Gualberto + C4” obtained a nomination to the Latin Grammy as Best Folk Album. One year later, the album “De Repente”, made in collaboration with the singer Rafael “Pollo” Brito, obtains the Latin Grammy as “Best Recording Engineering for an Album”.

“Throughout the year we present concerts and programs that put the spotlight on events that foster a spirit of community and inclusiveness. We are proud to present many of these events in partnership with community organizations and other key supporters.” – Gilmore Piano Festival

About Bill Cessna Trio

Bill Cessna (piano) leads his own trio through the Midwest. As a Jazz pianist/multi-instrumentalist with a mission to create and present musical experiences that preserve and celebrate Black American Music and the genius of jazz music and improvisation, he began his studies for jazz piano on scholarship at Columbia College Chicago in 2009. During his undergraduate time, he has the opportunities to study under Peter Saxe, Dennis Luxion, Donald Neale, and Sebastian Huydts. He also had the opportunity to perform alongside acclaimed musicians such as Christina McBride, Benny Golson, Wycliffe Gordon, Jeremy Pelt, Davis Douglas and more. After graduating in 2013, Bill quickly became an in-demand sideman in Chicago’s vibrant music scene. Currently, Bill is attending WMU on scholarship pursuing a graduate degree in jazz piano. He maintains a busy teaching and performing schedule in both the Chicago and Detroit areas.

Denis Shebukhov (bass) was born in Vyatskie Polyany, Russia on March 28, 1976. His first introduction to live music was through his father’s singing. At the age of 8 he started his music education at the local music school. His first instrument was a bayan (Russian form of accordion), but very soon he switched to the tuba. In 1993, he was accepted to Kirov College of Music where he studied tuba and electric bass. Soon after moving to Kirov, Denis got his first gig playing bass with the dance theatre Dimka. After winning a regional brass competition in Vladimir he was asked to continue his education in Glinka Conservatory in Nizhny Novgorod.

Drummer, composer, and educator Ethan Bouwsma (drums) has become one of the most in-demand drummers in the West Michigan music scene. Currently residing in Kalamazoo, MI, he has established himself as a versatile musician, playing with artists of varying genres all over the state. In addition to being involved with numerous jazz ensembles as a sideman, he also leads his own original-music jazz project, is the current drummer for Grand Rapids-based R&B/funk band The Hip Pocket, and is a member of Fake Baseball, an eclectic art-pop band based in Kalamazoo. As a drummer, Ethan has been influenced by the sensibilities of musicians like Elvin Jones, Brian Blade, and Billy Hart.

About Tyree Broadway

As a child, Tyree Broadway would roam his childhood home and touch all the bumps and ridges on the artwork his parents had. He didn’t know this could damage the work, but as a child, nonetheless, he was drawn to the texture. He wants kids to enjoy and be drawn to his work as well. Therefore, he incorporates many of the same things he was and is attracted to in his art. Texture and wildlife have a prominent role in what he creates.

Presented in partnership with the Kalamazoo State Theatre, this free outdoor event is featured on the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo’s ArtHop.

4-time GRAMMY nominated R&B/Jazz saxophonist, songwriter and producer, Boney James, returns to the Kalamazoo State Theatre on April 24th.

Boney James is bringing his classic smooth jams like “Stone Groove,” “Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart),” “Sweet Thing,” and “Butter,” as well as performing songs from his brand new album “Honestly,” for an incredible night of genre-blurring jazz on April 24th at the Kalamazoo State Theatre.

Lushh is made up of musicians with ties to Western Michigan University, this eclectic five-member ensemble ignores all the rules, like all great jazz acts should, and just creates its own sound. Most recently, the band recorded a full-length album live at a mixed-media event where visual artists and a live audience interacted with the improvisational flow. Inspired by everything from video games to electronica, metal and soul, expect the unexpected from these freethinkers. – Revue Magazine

Dave Koz has assembled a powerhouse line up of brass instrumentation for the Summer Tour Season of 2018, with special guests: Gerald Albright, Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, and introducing Aubrey Logan.

This high energy tour will be delivering all of the hits, including songs from the upcoming new album, ‘Dave Koz and Friends Summer Horns.’ The first Summer Horns release debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Current Contemporary Jazz Album chart.

Hailed by The New York Times as “a musician of unflappable rhythmic aplomb, which he happily squares against the airtight funk of his band,” Koz will be joined by Gerald Albright, known for his acclaimed solo recordings and performances with Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, and The Temptations; Rick Braun, chart-topping trumpeter, who has collaborated across genre’s with Rod Stewart, Sade, and REO Speedwagon;  Richard Elliot, a former member of Tower of Power who has since forged a successful solo career; And as part of the stellar musicians on stage, Koz is excited to introduce Aubrey Logan known for jammin’ on her trombone or sailing through a song with her nothing-held-back, multi-octave vocal instrument. Aubrey captivates audiences and delivers originality to everything modern in music; And finally, guitarist Adam Hawley, named both Smooth Jazz News’ and JazzTrax’ Debut Artist of the Year.

Join us this winter at the Kalamazoo State Theatre for a performance by Australian guitarist, songwriter and occasional singer, Tommy Emmanuel!  Experience one full set of Tommy Emmanuel’s solo classic acoustic songs, and one full set of Christmas favorites with Pat Bergeson, John Knowles CGP, and Annie Sellick. Best known for his complex fingerstyle technique, energetic performances and the use of percussive effects on the guitar, Emmanuel has carved out his own style as a solo artist in recent years, releasing award-winning albums and singles.

The accomplished artist threads three different parts simultaneously into his material, operating as a one-man band who handles the melody, the supporting chords and the bass all at once. Emmanuel’s technical gift and skill has earned him multiple awards from Guitar Player magazine and made him a Member of the Order of Australia.
