Get ready to “Surrender” to Cheap Trick when they take the stage at the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre November 5, 2022!

Cheap Trick are an indisputable American institution, beloved around the globe since 1974 for their instantly identifiable, hugely influential, brand of pop rock ‘n’ roll. The band – Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar), Tom Petersson (bass guitar), and Daxx Nielsen (drums) – are true pioneers with an unparalleled streak of certifiably classic tunes, from “He’s A Whore,” “California Man” and “Dream Police” to “Surrender” and “I Want You To Want Me.” After a year of show cancellations due to the pandemic, Cheap Trick began touring once again with the same lineup of the last several years which includes Robin Taylor Zander on rhythm guitar and vocals.

In May 2018, the band released their single, “The Summer Looks Good On You.” The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers co-produced the electrifying rocker alongside their long-time collaborator, GRAMMY® Award winner Julian Raymond (Glen Campbell, Fastball). The song was the first glimpse at the band’s 20th studio album, IN ANOTHER WORLD, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Rock Chart upon its release in spring 2021, their highest first week chart placement in their long, remarkable career. The record also bowed at #1 on the “Record Label Independent Current Albums” chart, #5 “Current Digital,” #6 “Top Current,” #6 “Internet,” #7 Top Albums,” and #10 “Digital.” To add to the excitement, the album’s single, “Light Up The Fire,” peaked at #1 at Classic Rock Radio both Mediabase and BDS.

“Since their first album in 1977, Cheap Trick has consistently put out perfectly polished power-pop and hard rock gems, and that tradition continues on In Another World…All we can do is be thankful for the longevity and endless creativity of the quartet from Rockford, Illinois.” – Associated Press

Three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams is “Ramblin” into the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre Wednesday, September 21, 2022!

Williams has traveled a long road since her 1979 debut, Ramblin’ on My Mind, followed by Happy Woman Blues, her first album of originals released forty years ago in 1980. (She says that she’s still “the same girl” except that now “I have a bigger fan base and I can afford to stay at better hotels.”) Over the course of fourteen remarkable albums, three Grammy awards, and countless accolades, including Time’s Songwriter of the Year of 2001, Williams is one of our most revered artists, beloved for her singular vocals and extraordinary songs. Her recent double albums, Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone (2014) and Ghosts of Highway 20 (2016), released on her own label, received some of the best reviews of her career.

From “Sweet Old World” and “Passionate Kisses” to “Drunken Angel” and “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road,” her songs leave no emotional crevice left unexplored. With a string of critically acclaimed albums and a reputation as a formidable songwriter, Williams’s songwriting is as strong and important as it has ever been.

“It’s all come full circle,” says Lucinda Williams about her powerful new album, Good Souls Better Angels. After more than forty years of music making, the pioneering, Louisiana-born artist has returned to the gritty blues foundation that first inspired her as a young singer-songwriter in the late 1970s. And after spending the last year on her sold-out “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” 20th Anniversary tour, Williams has reunited with that game-changing 1998 album’s co-producer and engineer Ray Kennedy, recording Good Souls, Better Angels with her ace touring band at his Nashville studio.

Michigan independent concert promoter Audiotree Presents is excited to bring Blackberry Smoke back to the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre Saturday, July 30, 2022!

Throughout their career, Blackberry Smoke— vocalist/lead guitarist Charlie Starr, guitarist/vocalist Paul Jackson, bassist/vocalist Richard Turner, drummer Brit Turner, and keyboardist Brandon Still—has embodied Georgia’s rich musical legacy, honoring the people, places and sounds of their home state. As the band celebrates more than 20 years, their reverence for Georgia has only deepened.

On their latest album, You Hear Georgia, the follow-up to 2018’s critically acclaimed Find a Light, Blackberry Smoke is further celebrating these roots with 10 new songs that feel like Georgia, accented by the addition of Grammy-winning producer and fellow Georgia-native, Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile). “Dave and I had spoken for the last few years about making a record,” Starr says. “Finally, it worked out, our schedule and his schedule, and we said, yes—let’s make a record.”

One of indie rock’s most critically acclaimed acts, Spoon is bringing their Lucifer on the Sofa Tour to the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre Tuesday, July 12, 2022!

Spoon’s tenth album, Lucifer on the Sofa, is the band’s purest rock ’n roll record to date. Texas-made, it is the first set of songs that the quintet has put to tape in its hometown of Austin in more than a decade. Written and recorded over the last two years – both in and out of lockdown – these songs mark a shift toward something louder, wilder, and more full-color.

From the detuned guitars anchoring “The Hardest Cut,” to the urgency of “Wild,” to the band’s blown-out cover of the Smog classic “Held,” Lucifer on the Sofa bottles the physical thrill of a band tearing up a packed room. It’s an album of intensity and intimacy, where the music’s harshest edges feel as vivid as the directions quietly murmured into the mic on the first-take. According to frontman Britt Daniel, “It’s the sound of classic rock as written by a guy who never did get Eric Clapton.”

Lucifer on the Sofa is the sound of that moment, a record of defiant optimism, the sound of a band cracking things open and letting them spill out onstage. At a time fraught with uncertainty, it’s shutting the door on the devil you know and never looking back.

Since BODEGA’s formation in 2016, Ben and Nikki (who previously played together in the band BODEGA BAY) have experienced a rare meteoric rise. The duo double as filmmakers, earning acclaim for their 2020 erotic drama PVT Chat starring Peter Vack, Julia Fox, and other recognizable faces from the Safdie Brothers’ cinematic universe. When the pandemic forced them to hit pause, they used the opportunity to regroup with drummer/performance artist Tai Lee, bassist/philosophy professor Adam See, and lead guitarist Dan Ryan. Broken Equipment was produced by Ben himself with Bobby Lewis, BODEGA’s NYC live sound mixer. The record was mixed by Bryce Goggin, whom the band sought out for his work with Pavement, and Adam Sachs (WIVES).

Get ready to go Surfing with the Alien!  We are excited to announce guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani’s return to the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre Friday, October 14, 2022!

Joe Satriani is the world’s most commercially successful solo guitar performer, with six gold and platinum discs to his credit (including one more gold award for the debut album by his band Chickenfoot), and sales in excess of 10 million copies. Satriani’s 19th studio album, The Elephants of Mars, crackles with an exciting new energy, briskly traveling through stylistic roads that feel freshly updated, viewed through new eyes. Forced time away from the road due to the pandemic, allowed for time to deliver an album length journey that never dulls.

Joe Satriani had an admirably productive workingman’s holiday, forced time away from the road that ultimately produced his 19th studio album, The Elephants of Mars, as the final result.

The guitarist challenged himself to create a “new standard” for instrumental guitar albums to be measured against, one which would work from “a new platform of his own design,” as he terms it. “I want to show people that the instrumental guitar album can contain far more complexity of creative elements than I think people are using right now.

Satriani and his touring band, all recording remotely in separate areas of the world during lockdown, answered that challenge in spades. The Elephants of Mars crackles with an exciting new energy, briskly traveling through stylistic roads that feel freshly updated, viewed through new eyes.

From the gripping, sci-fi madness of “Through A Mother’s Day Darkly,” to the isolation felt in a decaying urban landscape, as depicted in “Sahara,” to the general endorphin levels that peak as the elephants finally roar in the title track, The Elephants of Mars offers up an album length journey that never dulls.

Event: 5:00 PM

Join us for Art Hop at the Kalamazoo State Theatre Friday, April 1 as we celebrate Mother Earth!  We are proudly partnering with Bee Joyful and we’ll be featuring 4 artists as we highlight sustainability and the beauty of our amazing planet.

Stop in our lobby starting at 5pm where artists Stephanie Clark, Valarie Birch and Sara Rio will be showcasing their amazing art, and musical duo the Incantations will entertain you with their unique blend of blues, rock and folk music.  Our bar will be open and you can also sign up to take our Historic Backstage and Beyond Tour!

About The Incantations: The Kalamazoo-based band, the Incantations, weave a delicate tapestry of dark and light, twisting together the elements of blues, rock, and folk music that define Americana. The duo of Lisa Mackie and Ryan Gladding conjures up evocative lyrics that etch an indelible mark in your memory and melodies that resonate long after the last note has been played. The music that they summon is a powerful reflection from the roads they have traveled.

About Stephanie Clark: Stephanie Clark is a self-taught artist that was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan but has lived near Kalamazoo for the past few years. Her art is heavily influenced by her life-long intrigue of the natural world, and formal education as an ecologist. Stephanie graduated with a B.S. in Biology from Aquinas College in 2018 and is currently pursuing a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Michigan State University.

Growing up, Stephanie was inspired by artists such as M.C. Escher, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Salvador Dali. Though she continues to study and gain inspiration from these artists, she currently enjoys the artistry of field guides and children’s nature books.

Stephanie’s artwork visualizes interactions between species in a unique and colorful fashion. With so many insect, plant, and animal species succumbing to the effects of climate change, Stephanie hopes that viewers can experience how fascinating these creatures are through her work. In a constantly changing world, Stephanie would like to bring nature to her viewers no matter where they may be.

About Valarie Birch: Other Curiosities is owned by Kalamazoo local Valarie Birch. Dabbling in the more obscure things in life Val creates one of a kind skull, bone and nature works as well as many other curiosities such as pins, stickers, keychains and more!

“Valarie Birch’s art is something of a smorgasbord – with some unusual source material. The full-time artist and owner of Other Curiosities paints, photographs, and creates everything from stickers, jewelry, and sun-catchers, to tiny vials holding treasures from nature. But the most eye-catching pieces often begin as roadkill.” – Zinta Aistars, WMUK Art Beat

About Sara Rio: Born in Michigan, Sara Rio is a ceramic artist located in Kalamazoo. She graduated from WMU with a bachelors degree in fine arts. Her work can be categorized as functional pottery with an emphasis on traditional kitchen tools from a modern perspective. Bright colors work together with natural earthy tones in collaboration with stamp work and hand carving to decorate the surfaces of her pottery.

About Bee Joyful: Bee Joyful Shop is Michigan’s first Zero Waste Shop and Refillery, featuring locally-made and sustainably sourced zero waste products for your home, kitchen, bath, and beauty routine.  Located in the heart of Downtown Kalamazoo and Downtown Dexter, Bee Joyful Shop specializes in doing the heavy lifting for you when it comes to sustainable swaps and is 100% devoted to the craft of providing single-use alternatives that are good for you and our planet.

CMA Album of the Year nominee Carly Pearce taking the stage at the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre Friday, April 8, 2022!

ABOUT CARLY PEARCE: Fiercely rooted in the classics, the girl who left her Kentucky home and high school at 16 to take a job at Dollywood has grown into a woman who embraces the genre’s forward progression and is confident in what she wants to say. Lighting a fire with her debut album EVERY LITTLE THING and the PLATINUM-certified history making title track, Carly has since become “Country’s ‘it’ girl” (ABC Radio), touring alongside Blake Shelton, Rascal Flatts and Luke Bryan. With the most CMA Awards nods for any new artist in 2020, she won Musical Event of the Year. In a year of uncertainty, Carly turned to the comfort of records she’s drawn inspiration from since her childhood dream started to take hold – Dolly, The Chicks, Trisha, Reba, Patty Loveless. Like those before, she leaned on her own intuitions with Top 30-and-rising single “Next Girl,” and a clever new video. Carly explores more of a pivotal time with a seven-song collection called 29 (available now via Big Machine Records), finding creative simpatico with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne following the unexpected death of her mentor and former producer busbee. With her catalogue already boasts over 1 billion streams, she opens up even more in Carly Pearce’s 29 – The Interview. As Carly marks a new chapter coming of age, she earns three ACM Awards nominations for Female Artist, Single and Music Event of the Year with her PLATINUM-certified, No. 1 duet with Lee Brice “I Hope You’re Happy Now.”

ABOUT HANNAH ELLIS:  A native of Campbellsville, Kentucky, Hannah Ellis is a country music artist and songwriter based in Nashville, Tn. Hannah grew up competing in every small-town contest she could find her way into and was exposed to live performance with opening slots for artists like Lee Brice and Jake Owen at an early age. In 2012, Hannah graduated from The University of Kentucky and headed straight to music city. She had a stop on season eight of NBC’s The Voice and signed her first publishing deal in 2015.  Hannah released her most recent single “Home and a Hometown” in July of 2018. Both “ILYSoWhat” and “Home and a Hometown” have surpassed the 1 Million mark on Spotify.
