Kyle Jennings and Friends – Nashville Storytellers, returns to the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre December 9, 2022 for a live acoustic songwriters’ showcase brought to you by Northpointe Bank and benefiting the West Michigan Cancer Center.

Hosted by Dana Perino, the event features hit Nashville songwriters who have written smash #1 hits for artists like Kenny Chesney, Aaron Lewis, Keith Urban, Uncle Kracker, Trace Adkins, Garth Brooks, Darius Rucker, Dierks Bentley, Blake Shelton, Montgomery Gentry, and many more! The evening focuses on the writers’ side of the country music; and writers take turns sharing the stories behind the songs and then perform original versions of their hits in an engaging intimate acoustic setting.

“It’s a unique experience. It’s more of a variety show really. A little bit of comedy, and little bit of music, some wild stories, and 100% entertainment! Shows like these are going on in dozens of locations every night in Nashville”, Jennings says. “It’s one of the most defining experiences of Music City.”

Many of the songs I knew from country radio, I fell in love with the authenticity of the original performances by the writers and hearing the stories behind the songs. That’s what Nashville is all about. It’s what made me fall in love with songwriting and the songwriting process and I wanted to bring that experience to Kalamazoo.”

In addition to the talent on stage this year special guest host and Fox News superstar Dana Perino joins the stage to host. “Dana’s affinity for country music and songwriting makes her a great ambassador to this event and we’re so proud that she would join us for this special night.”

Performing on December 9th are East Tennessee’s Chris Wallin’ (Don’t Blink” – Kenny Chesney, “Everybody Talks to God” – Aaron Lewis) Detroit, MI native JT Harding (“Smile” – Uncle Kracker, “Somewhere With You” – Kenny Chesney), mega-hit writer Doug Johnson (“Three Wooden Crosses” – Randy Travis, “Love Like Crazy” – Lee Brice) and Kalamazoo’s own Kyle Jennings!

Three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams is “Ramblin” into the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre Wednesday, September 21, 2022!

Williams has traveled a long road since her 1979 debut, Ramblin’ on My Mind, followed by Happy Woman Blues, her first album of originals released forty years ago in 1980. (She says that she’s still “the same girl” except that now “I have a bigger fan base and I can afford to stay at better hotels.”) Over the course of fourteen remarkable albums, three Grammy awards, and countless accolades, including Time’s Songwriter of the Year of 2001, Williams is one of our most revered artists, beloved for her singular vocals and extraordinary songs. Her recent double albums, Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone (2014) and Ghosts of Highway 20 (2016), released on her own label, received some of the best reviews of her career.

From “Sweet Old World” and “Passionate Kisses” to “Drunken Angel” and “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road,” her songs leave no emotional crevice left unexplored. With a string of critically acclaimed albums and a reputation as a formidable songwriter, Williams’s songwriting is as strong and important as it has ever been.

“It’s all come full circle,” says Lucinda Williams about her powerful new album, Good Souls Better Angels. After more than forty years of music making, the pioneering, Louisiana-born artist has returned to the gritty blues foundation that first inspired her as a young singer-songwriter in the late 1970s. And after spending the last year on her sold-out “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” 20th Anniversary tour, Williams has reunited with that game-changing 1998 album’s co-producer and engineer Ray Kennedy, recording Good Souls, Better Angels with her ace touring band at his Nashville studio.

Grammy Award winner Dwight Yoakam makes his long-awaited return to the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre Thursday, August 25, 2022!

Dwight Yoakam has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, and he is a 21-time nominated, multiple GRAMMY Award winner. He has 12 gold albums and 9 platinum or multi-platinum albums, with five of those albums topping Billboard’s Country Albums chart and another 14 landing in the Top 10. Nearly 40 of Yoakam’s singles have charted on Billboard, with 14 peaking in the Top 10. Yoakam is a recipient of the Artist of the Year award from the Americana Music Association, the most prestigious award offered by the organization, he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in the Songwriter/Artist category at the 49th anniversary Gala on October 14, 2019 in Nashville, TN.

Yoakam’s self-curated SiriusXM channel, titled Dwight Yoakam and The Bakersfield Beat ‘Where Country Went Mod’ launched in April of 2018. The channel celebrates the Bakersfield sound and those whom it has inspired. Guests have boasted the likes of Post Malone, Lukas Nelson, Beck, Chris Hillman, Jakob Dylan, Mike Nesmith and Mickey Dolans, Dave Alvin, and Jackie DeShannon, among others.

In 2016, Yoakam released his bluegrass album Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars… on Sugar Hill Records. Featuring a band of bluegrass luminaries, this album boasts a collection of reinterpreted favorites from his catalogue, as well as a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain”. Produced by nine-time GRAMMY winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton), Jon Randall (songwriter of “Whiskey Lullaby”), and Yoakam himself, and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge, this album reflects the love for bluegrass music that Yoakam developed at an early age in Kentucky and that has inspired him for many years thereafter.  In 2018, Yoakam released two songs, “Pretty Horses” and “Then Came Monday” (the latter written with Chris Stapleton).

In addition to his musical career, Yoakam is a formidable film and television actor who has appeared in over 40 feature films, including Sling Blade and Panic Room. Most recently he was on the big screen in Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Cry Macho. He recurred in David E. Kelley’s Amazon series Goliath and appeared in director Steven Soderbergh’s film Logan Lucky with Channing Tatum and Daniel Craig.

Brit Taylor is eastern Kentucky born and bred, with music flowing through her veins and songs resonating in her soul. She has known what she was meant to do since her debut on the Kentucky Opry at age 7, and she never lost sight of her goal.

Brit’s music captures life and all its sadness and joy with poetic ease and plain honesty. She unabashedly writes and sings about what she lives, what she knows, what she sees. Her debut album, Real Me, was a self-reflective, 10-song LP telling of a journey to self-awareness from the depths of despair. Her soon-to-be released new album, produced by Sturgil Simpson and co-produced by David Ferguson, is a happier, more upbeat record, simply reflecting her life today. The album is feisty, funky and pure country. It will make you laugh and make you teary eyed.

Country legend and Grammy Award winner Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives will grace the stage at the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre Friday, May 20, 2022!

With legends like George Jones, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard all passed on, country music purists often echo the question Jones himself asked: “Who’s going to fill their shoes?” The answer, in part, is Marty Stuart.

While he’s too gracious to admit it himself, the Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and musician is living, breathing country-music history. He’s played alongside the masters, from Cash to Lester Flatt, who discovered him; been a worldwide ambassador for Nashville, Bakersfield and points in between; and safeguarded country’s most valuable traditions and physical artifacts. Including its literal shoes: Stuart counts the brogan of Carter Family patriarch A.P. Carter and an assortment of Cash’s black boots among his vast collection of memorabilia.

But most importantly, Stuart continues to record and release keenly relevant music, records that honor country’s rich legacy while advancing it into the future. Way Out West, his 18th studio album, hits both of those marks. Produced by Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), the album is a cinematic tour-de-force, an exhilarating musical journey through the California desert that solidifies Stuart as a truly visionary artist.

“I would play this record for Hank Williams, Merle Haggard or Ernest Hemingway and never bat an eye,” says Stuart. “There’s something in there that would entertain each of them.”

Nashville is coming to Kalamazoo! Kalamazoo native and country singer/songwriter Kyle Jennings hosts ‘Kyle Jennings & Friends – Nashville Storytellers’, a lineup of award-winning Nashville songwriters at the Kalamazoo State Theatre December 11, for a live acoustic songwriters’ showcase presented by Kalamazoo Mortgage.

The event features hit songwriters who have penned smash #1 hits for artists like Luke Combs, Eric Church, Blake Shelton, Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Joe Nichols, Easton Corbin, Montgomery Gentry, and many more! The evening focuses on the songwriters’ side of the country music; where writers take turns sharing the stories behind the songs and then perform their original versions of their hits in an engaging intimate setting.

“It’s really a unique and special experience. It’s a little bit of comedy, and little bit of music, some wild stories, and 100% entertainment! Shows like these are going on in dozens of locations every night in Nashville” Jennings says. “It’s one of the most defining experiences of Music City. It’s what made me fall in love with songwriting and the songwriting process and I wanted to bring that experience to Kalamazoo.”

About Hired Hands Band

The Hired Hands Band is an acoustic ensemble, hailing from America’s heartland. The band draws from a salty mix of musical interests to produce an eclectic sound that is truly American. The band’s repertoire weaves in and out of many genres, including Blues, Folk, Country, Roots Rock and R&B.

Introducing the Hired Hands Band
Bob Allison sings and plays acoustic guitar for the Hired Hands. Over the past three decades, he has done the same for a wide variety of Country/Rock and Bluegrass bands in the area, most notably the Bluegrass group, Heartland. As a member of the Moody Coyotes, Bob demonstrated an affinity for singer-songwriters of the Folk and Country traditions – interest and talent that are wonderfully compatible with the Hired Hands repertoire.

Bill Hughes is the most schooled musician in the Hired Hands. His band mates often rely upon his expertise to help break down and analyze music when learning new material. Bill learned to play the trombone in his formative years, and eventually chose bass guitar as his instrument of choice. Bill is also the bassist for Kalamazoo favorite, Seventh Son Blues Band. Many moons ago, he also played regularly with another local Blues band, Black Cat Bone. Mr. Hughes has also been known to dip his toes into the Rock, Country and Surf genres too. This versatility makes him a perfect fit for Hired Hands.

Laura Allison-Nicol, Bob’s daughter, learned to sing around the campfire. She was heavily influenced by her Dad’s taste in music. About the time Bob, Dale, and Bill were forming the band that would evolve into the Hired Hands, Laura was singing harmonies for an Alt-Country band in Chicago, called the New 65’s. After sitting in with the Hired Hands here and there for a few years, she decided to formally join in 2015. Her beautiful voice and contributions on the banjo have added new dimensions to the band.

Dale Hein, another veteran musician from Kalamazoo, sings and plays harmonica. In 2010, he ended a 9-year stint with the Blue Moon Blues Band and became a founding member of the Hired Hands. Prior to Blue Moon, Dale played with a several bands in the area, mainly in the Blues genre. He also owned and operated a used record shop in downtown, Kalamazoo during the late 70’s and early 80’s. It is therefore no coincidence that Dale has a huge music collection to complement his eclectic taste in music!

We can’t wait to see you all at this free, outdoor event!

Michigan Rattlers Live From KST: 7:30pm

They’re back!  And this time they are taking the stage at the Kalamazoo State Theatre!

We are excited to announce a special Livestream concert featuring the Michigan Rattlers! Join the Michigan natives for a special LIVE performance and Q&A direct from the Kalamazoo State Theatre stage to your home Thursday, 8/27/20 at 7:30pm!

Lifelong friends and deep-north natives, Michigan Rattlers play heavy-hearted folk-rock with an aching dose of Midwestern nice. Graham Young (lead vocals/guitar), Adam Reed (vocals/upright bass), Christian Wilder (vocals/piano) and Tony Audia (drums) began writing music and performing together in their Northern Michigan high school.  After a few years apart, Reed and Young settled down in Los Angeles, recorded a short demo, and began playing locally. The demo found its way in the hands of super-producer Johnny K. Their self-titled Michigan Rattlers EP attracted glowing reviews from No Depression, Bluegrass Situation, Relix, Glide, Grammy.com and more.

Rolling Stone named the band one of their “Ten New Country Artists You Need To Know.” In 2018, following a massive summer tour that included stops at Bonnaroo, Firefly and Electric Forest; the band released their highly anticipated debut full length album, Evergreen. The Michigan Rattlers are gearing up to release their second full-length album this year.
