Three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams is “Ramblin” into the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre Wednesday, September 21, 2022!

Williams has traveled a long road since her 1979 debut, Ramblin’ on My Mind, followed by Happy Woman Blues, her first album of originals released forty years ago in 1980. (She says that she’s still “the same girl” except that now “I have a bigger fan base and I can afford to stay at better hotels.”) Over the course of fourteen remarkable albums, three Grammy awards, and countless accolades, including Time’s Songwriter of the Year of 2001, Williams is one of our most revered artists, beloved for her singular vocals and extraordinary songs. Her recent double albums, Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone (2014) and Ghosts of Highway 20 (2016), released on her own label, received some of the best reviews of her career.

From “Sweet Old World” and “Passionate Kisses” to “Drunken Angel” and “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road,” her songs leave no emotional crevice left unexplored. With a string of critically acclaimed albums and a reputation as a formidable songwriter, Williams’s songwriting is as strong and important as it has ever been.

“It’s all come full circle,” says Lucinda Williams about her powerful new album, Good Souls Better Angels. After more than forty years of music making, the pioneering, Louisiana-born artist has returned to the gritty blues foundation that first inspired her as a young singer-songwriter in the late 1970s. And after spending the last year on her sold-out “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” 20th Anniversary tour, Williams has reunited with that game-changing 1998 album’s co-producer and engineer Ray Kennedy, recording Good Souls, Better Angels with her ace touring band at his Nashville studio.

About Crossroads Resurrection Reunion Band

Formerly Crossroads Blues Band, Crossroads Resurrection is one of the premier definers of the Kalamazoo sound. Their unique, funky blend of blues, soul and swamp grooves as well as their engaging stage show has been winning awards and entertaining Michigan audiences for years.

The band started out hosting a jam in Kalamazoo (located exactly half way between Detroit and Chicago) which became a huge attraction for some of the best players in the area. From this musical melting pot, this superb group was forged. The lineup consists of the big vocals and smooth sax playing of front man Eddie Lester, the stellar guitar and vocals of Dave Allemang, and the solid rhythm section of Charles Johnson on bass and Jeff Fernandez on drums. Whether packing the dance floor with a crowd pleasing cover song, drawing from their vast repertoire of original material or just jamming these seasoned pros can and have laid it down with the best of them!. Some of the many awards they’ve won include the Kalamazoo Valley Blues Association blues challenge in 1999 and 2011, the Mid North Michigan blues challenge in 2004, the West Michigan blues Challenge in 2007, and the Detroit Blues Society Blues Challenge in 2009. They were nominated for the WYCE Jammie Award in 2005 and 2009. They have shared the stage with many notable artists including Little Charlie and the Night Cats, Lonnie Brooks and Tab Benoit.

About Hired Hands Band

The Hired Hands Band is an acoustic ensemble, hailing from America’s heartland. The band draws from a salty mix of musical interests to produce an eclectic sound that is truly American. The band’s repertoire weaves in and out of many genres, including Blues, Folk, Country, Roots Rock and R&B.

Introducing the Hired Hands Band
Bob Allison sings and plays acoustic guitar for the Hired Hands. Over the past three decades, he has done the same for a wide variety of Country/Rock and Bluegrass bands in the area, most notably the Bluegrass group, Heartland. As a member of the Moody Coyotes, Bob demonstrated an affinity for singer-songwriters of the Folk and Country traditions – interest and talent that are wonderfully compatible with the Hired Hands repertoire.

Bill Hughes is the most schooled musician in the Hired Hands. His band mates often rely upon his expertise to help break down and analyze music when learning new material. Bill learned to play the trombone in his formative years, and eventually chose bass guitar as his instrument of choice. Bill is also the bassist for Kalamazoo favorite, Seventh Son Blues Band. Many moons ago, he also played regularly with another local Blues band, Black Cat Bone. Mr. Hughes has also been known to dip his toes into the Rock, Country and Surf genres too. This versatility makes him a perfect fit for Hired Hands.

Laura Allison-Nicol, Bob’s daughter, learned to sing around the campfire. She was heavily influenced by her Dad’s taste in music. About the time Bob, Dale, and Bill were forming the band that would evolve into the Hired Hands, Laura was singing harmonies for an Alt-Country band in Chicago, called the New 65’s. After sitting in with the Hired Hands here and there for a few years, she decided to formally join in 2015. Her beautiful voice and contributions on the banjo have added new dimensions to the band.

Dale Hein, another veteran musician from Kalamazoo, sings and plays harmonica. In 2010, he ended a 9-year stint with the Blue Moon Blues Band and became a founding member of the Hired Hands. Prior to Blue Moon, Dale played with a several bands in the area, mainly in the Blues genre. He also owned and operated a used record shop in downtown, Kalamazoo during the late 70’s and early 80’s. It is therefore no coincidence that Dale has a huge music collection to complement his eclectic taste in music!

We can’t wait to see you all at this free, outdoor event!

Michigan Rattlers Live From KST: 7:30pm

They’re back!  And this time they are taking the stage at the Kalamazoo State Theatre!

We are excited to announce a special Livestream concert featuring the Michigan Rattlers! Join the Michigan natives for a special LIVE performance and Q&A direct from the Kalamazoo State Theatre stage to your home Thursday, 8/27/20 at 7:30pm!

Lifelong friends and deep-north natives, Michigan Rattlers play heavy-hearted folk-rock with an aching dose of Midwestern nice. Graham Young (lead vocals/guitar), Adam Reed (vocals/upright bass), Christian Wilder (vocals/piano) and Tony Audia (drums) began writing music and performing together in their Northern Michigan high school.  After a few years apart, Reed and Young settled down in Los Angeles, recorded a short demo, and began playing locally. The demo found its way in the hands of super-producer Johnny K. Their self-titled Michigan Rattlers EP attracted glowing reviews from No Depression, Bluegrass Situation, Relix, Glide, Grammy.com and more.

Rolling Stone named the band one of their “Ten New Country Artists You Need To Know.” In 2018, following a massive summer tour that included stops at Bonnaroo, Firefly and Electric Forest; the band released their highly anticipated debut full length album, Evergreen. The Michigan Rattlers are gearing up to release their second full-length album this year.

Ring in the new year with The Dead South, The Crane Wives and The Hooten Hallers! 3 bands for the price of one!

Love the lineup but have never experienced the great vibes and the atmosphere of our venue? Here’s some of our badassery for NYE:
*1920’s escapism architecture which transports you into a Spanish court yard
*An atmospheric theatre with a starry sky and clouds above you
*Two levels to explore
*Multiple full bars (yes we support 7&7 and Jameson lovers)
*Party pit in front of the stage for rowdy folks
*A photo station upstairs with props to capture your group’s awesomeness
This event will be the best of both worlds. You get your whimsical midnight kiss and you also get to party along and slam beers with The Dead South. The Crane Wives and The Hooten Hallers will be bringing their flare as the artists opening this event. Compared to other NYE events, you won’t get this one of a kind experience. Tickets for 2 are $75 in advance or $80 if we’re not sold out day of show.

The Dead South have been described as outlaws and modern hillbillies, but the best way to describe the Regina-based band is fearless. They’re a rare musical commodity – a band that’s equally compelling on record as they are on stage. While The Dead South’s signature blend of bluegrass and classic folk is familiar, it’s also eminently fresh; fueled by the kind of energy and ethic you’d associate with a punk band.

The Crane Wives came together in 2010 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and immediately began gathering a following with intricate melodies, sister-harmonies, and compelling songcraft.  Initially part of the indie folk boom, their sound has grown and broadened with each new recording till categorization becomes difficult:  rock, pop, folk?  Just call it really good music.

Columbia, Missouri trio The Hooten Hallers are a high-energy blues-rock band known for hard-traveling and wild live shows, with a seemingly endless tour schedule. The myriad of influences in their music incorporates elements of rhythm & blues, rock’n’roll, honky tonk, jazz, soul, and punk with a thematic penchant for the strange and the unexplained. Their live shows take the listener on a seamless ride from unapologetically raucous blues on the lap steel and bass sax, to a sweet three-part harmony country ballad, to a romping dance number.
